Studio Tour

Tour the largest rapid prototyping company in the world!
Sponsored by Anvil Prototyping.

Prototyping is a critical part of product design.  With so many tools available, most designers have questions:

• Which technology should I use?
• When do I outsource?
• What tools make sense in my studio?
• What results can I expect and what are the limitations?

3D Systems has assembled the broadest range of prototyping and additive manufacturing technologies in the industry.  We can now effectively match
each design requirement, material specification and stage of the product development cycle.  At this event, you will understand how to best leverage the entire RP toolbox, gain insight into the future of additive manufacturing and learn how new technologies are opening up additional opportunities for creative design solutions.

Come when you can to this open house and network with colleagues and true design professionals throughout the region.  Short presentations are scheduled for those who want to dig deeper into the tools.

This event is the first of its kind to best answer these practical questions faced by mechanical design professionals.

Drop in anytime between 2-6pm on March 30, 2012.

2 pm:  Networking, facility tours and prototyping demonstrations
3 pm:  “Prototyping Decision Matrix”  -  Bill Watson, Managing Partner, Anvil Prototype & Design
3:30:  Networking break
4pm:  “The Future of Additive Manufacturing” – Cathy Lewis, VP, Global Marketing at 3D Systems
4:30 – 6pm:  Happy hour – networking, facility tours and prototyping demonstrations

George McCain, FIDSA was recently elected as board chair for the Industrial Designers Society of America.  One of his first actions was writing a letter that clearly articulates the value and relevance of our society and how we need to go forwsard.   It's well worth the read.

Go to letter.

Appalachian State University is proud to be hosting the annual Student IDSA Portfolio Review.  This year’s event the weekend of November 6, 2010.

This event would not be possible without the input of professionals, such as yourself, and we would appreciate your consideration of being one of the individuals giving professional feedback at this year’s review.

Our student chapter has been working to make this year’s event even more beneficial to relationships and networking, so along with the main venue, we have a number of secondary events throughout the weekend available to attendees.  Starting with a meet-and-greet kick-off Friday night and closing with a special Saturday evening event and cookout, we hope that you will consider making the weekend into a worthwhile trip instead of just a one day excursion.  Given the multi-day scheduling of this event, we have teams dedicated to helping you find affordable accommodations and transportation while in Boone.

If you are interested in helping us out on a professional level for any part of this event, please RSVP to AppStatePR@gmail.com for more information. Your dedicated contact is Seth Teeples. Our goal is to allow all of the participants of this event to make the most of their weekend in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, so please let us know how we can assist you.

IDSA WI Sketch Series Webinar:

Jon Polhamus - Digital Detail Sketches for Production

Friday, Nov. 12, 12:00pm - 12:45pm CST

Members: free / Non-Members: $10 (registration link below)

As designers we strive to ensure that our vision in concept is carried through into production. How do we communicate these ideas to the engineers & CAD designers we work with?

On November 12th, we will have the privilege of having Jon Polhamus from GE Healthcare Global Design demonstrate how GE Healthcare delineates concept sketches into manufacturing & production.

By utilizing layers in programs like Photoshop & Sketchbook Pro in combination with CAD geometry, Jon developed a best practice in GE Healthcare Global Design that helps engineers, manufacturing & Mechanical CAD Designers understand exactly how to retain the vision of the designer & turn it into reality without getting bogged down in 3D modeling.

So besides having "Mass Reduction" badges that pointed at your crotch did you notice anything else note worthy at the event?  As designers we improve through  the critique of others.  IDSA is certainly no different and we'd love to hear your comments.  In return we promise to use that feedback to help shape events to come.

Thanks in advance.
